Creighton Mine Fiber Art Gallery

Head frames loom over mine shafts and are a familiar sight in Creighton Mine, Northern Ontario, Canada.

This particular head frame was torn down in the 1970’s. Along with the majesty of the head frame I tried to capture the scarred landscape from years of devastation from the mining industry.

I used a photo of Creighton Mine from the 1930’s while working on this piece . During the depression there was no work in the mines but the families could stay in their company owned homes rent free. If they chose to leave, the houses were boarded up. Creighton Mine was a mining town in Northern Ontario, Canada.

A teachers' residence in Creighton Mine was provided by the mining company to entice young single women coming out of teachers college to begin their careers in small mining towns.

As soon as the teacher would marry they would then move into one of the company houses. Their lodging was part of their salary.

Saint Michaels was the Catholic Church in Creighton Mine. I used to sit on the hill across the street to watch the brides.

The trestle in the background was used to move tailings waste and nickel concentrate from the mine.
